CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): The outline of an argument is presented for deducing the basic chemo-physical properties of life from the knowledge of physical law and von Neumann's theory of selfreproducing automata. This entails an introduction to the problems of the origin of life, and an argument against a common misinterpretation of the 2nd law. I wrote my master's thesis about some cellular automata experiments. This was in , so in the 50th anniversary year of the book.

This essay explores reflexivity, reproduction, and evolutionary discourse in John von Neumann's "Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata" and, using Maturana and Varela's notion of autopoiesis, connects cybernetic conceptions of reflexivity to Richard Powers's novel, Galatea Not Available adshelp[at] The ADS is operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory under NASA Cooperative Agreement NNX16AC86AAuthor: John G. Theory of self-reproducing automata by John Von Neumann Download PDF EPUB FB2

The contents of this volume stem from two unfinished manuscripts, edited by Burks, and present Neumann's final conception of the theory of automata. Divided into two parts, the work covers complicated automata in general, comparing artificial and natural automata, as well as the logical design of a self-reproducing cellular automaton.

Von Neumann's goal was to specify an abstract. “The incomplete manuscript, including a lengthy introduction based on a series of five lectures given by von Neumann at the UNiversity of Illinois inwas eventually assembled, with careful editing by Arthur Burks, and published as Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata almost ten years after von neumann’s death.

Cellular automata (CA) are mathematical models used to simulate complex systems or processes. In several fields, including biology, physics, and chemistry, CA are employed to analyze phenomena such as the growth of plants, DNA evolution, and the s John von Neumann formalized the idea of cellular automata in order to create a theoretical model for a self-reproducing machine.
